The Angels continued their winning ways with a dominating 5-1 victory over Darien Dynamo. The game started with a very solid pace. Good, ball control offense was employed from the opening kick, particularly through the midfield, led by Abby Grzetic, Ashley Colaizzi, Taylor Cassian, and Hannah Gerdes. About 10 minutes into the game, the Angels worked the ball deep into Dynamo territory, and Safia Hannin beat a defender and then played a perfect pass to Kasey Campos who easily beat the keeper to start the scoring. Several other opportunites were created, including a few goals called back due to offside violations. Late in the first half, Darien was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, and was able to notch an equalizer with a great shot around the Angels defensive wall. This led to a 1-1 halftime score.
In the second half, the Angels cut loose. Brilliant offensive play quickly led to a Mikela Gerdes goal. A few minutes later, Hannin played an absolutely fantastic pass against the grain to Campos who beat a diving goalkeeper to widen the lead. Then the defensive effort, led by Macie McCallum, Megan Dorsey, Rylee Kibbey, Brianna Wunderlich, Megan DeMart, and Abby Glasgow completely shutdown the very large and strong Dynamo offense. Additionally, Colaizzi was very aggressive as keeper, turning away any real threat. The defensive effort continued to initiate offensive runs as well. Late in the game, M. Gerdes notched her second goal of the game, and then the Angels finished off Darien when Glasgow knocked in a corner kick. All in all, it was a great team effort. Of special note: Hannin becomes the first Angels player to tally four assists in a game.
The Angels are now 3-0 and will resume play after having off this coming weekend.
