The Angels wrapped up their Spring season with an absolute thriller as they travelled to Lemont to take on the Windy City Pride. The game started out in a very ugly fashion, as the Pride jumped all over the Angels, scoring 3 goals in the first 4 minutes of the game. Thankfully, the Angels did not hang their heads, but rather started playing their game, and slowly worked themselves back into contention. Late in the first half, Mikela Gerdes played a nice pass to Taylor Cassian, who was mowed down in the penalty area, giving the Angels a penalty kick, which Macie McCallum converted. Several minutes later, a great long ball was played over the defensive line's head, where Safia Hannin grabbed it, danced around the charging goal keeper and placed it in the net, to bring the score to 3-2 at the half. The Pride made it known throughout the first half that they were going to dictate play by being extremely physical, and it was up to the Angels to see if they could handle it.
In the second half, the the Angels started applying very strong pressure. Adjustments were made to try and neutralize the Pride's key player, and to start doubling up on their attackers as they received the ball. This started paying dividends almost immediately, as the Angels controlled the play for the first several minutes of the half. Finally, Kasey Campos blasted a shot from 20 yards out that the keeper could not control, knotting the score. Several minutes later, Rylee Kibbey played a diagonal pass into the left corner where Cassian grabbed it and immediately sent a cross in for Hannin to bang home with a great header. The Pride roared back quickly to tie the game at four goal apiece. Then, Campos struck again on a great shot, putting the Angels ahead again. A few minutes later, Abby Grzetic drove the ball down the left side, played a shot from outside that sailed over the keeper's head and into the corner of the net for an insurance goal. Within seconds, the Pride marched down the field, scoring yet again. Within the last minute, goalkeeper Ashley Colaizzi made a great save on a Pride free kick to maintain the slim lead and give the Angels the 6-5 victory. Despite the high scoring game, the Angels defenders, led by McCallum, Megan Dorsey, Brianna Wunderlich, Hannah Gerdes, and Abby Glasgow did a nice job in maintaining their composure and stopping several Pride chances. With all of the hectic play, and the constant scoring in the second half, this was clearly the most exciting game of the season. The Angels showed great heart and character in overcoming both the early deficit, as well as the brutally physical play of Windy City.
The Angels finished the season undefeated, with a 7-0-1 record, capturing first place in the division. In the fall, they will move up to the IWSL AB division. Congratulations on a job well done Angels!
