Coming off of an exciting Championship run in the Oswego Soccer Classic, the Angels returned to league play this past weekend as they hosted the TCSA Twisters. The Angels opened the game completely dominating the time of possession as they strung together several series of beautiful passes. The ball seemed to magically work itself around the field with ease as it was played from player to player. Despite the wonderful ball control, shots did not come easy. Midway through the first half, Taylor Cassian played a great cross from the left flank. Although no one was there to immediately collect the cross, Safia Hannin did chase it down along the goal line on the right side. After gaining control, she somehow found a way from the impossible angle to slip it past the goalkeeper to open the scoring. Several minutes later, the Angels earned several corner kicks. Abby Grzetic launched a great ball through the goal mouth. Macie McCallum used her size to block the keeper while Megan DeMart slammed home the corner kick with a powerful header to widen the lead.
In the second half, the defense took over for the Angels. Megan Dorsey, Abby Glasgow, Mikela Gerdes, Brianna Wunderlich, Hannah Gerdes, and McCallum shut down the Twisters. In the opening minutes of the half, Ashley Colaizzi blasted a goal kick up the field, where Hannin grabbed control of it and raced through a few defenders deep into the Twisters' zone. As she drew in the final defender, she slipped a nifty pass back to the middle where unmarked Kasey Campos used a one-time touch to score an easy goal. The Twisters were able to score one goal, near the end, but it did not take anything away from a well played game from the Angels. The dominant passing game was a thing of beauty, and was absolutely key to the 3-1 victory.
The Angels are now 6-0-1 on the season, as they head into the final weekend, when they will travel to face the Windy City Pride.
