As defeding champions of the Oswego Soccer Classic, the Angels took the field Friday night to play Galaxy Black. The game started very slowly, with the players simply trying to find ways to avoid slipping and falling on the slick field. The Angels still found ways to dominate the time of possession throughout the game. They struck first when defender Abby Glasgow fired a ball from the midfield stripe that found it's way into the net. Shortly thereafter, Taylor Cassian took a great pass from Abby Grzetic and put in a nice volley to produce a 2-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the passing became much more crisp and the domination truly began. Safia Hannin added a goal early in the period. Several minutes later, Macie McCallum drilled a free kick into the upper corner of the net. The scoring was completed when Kasey Campos notched a goal, giving the Angels a convincing 5-0 victory to open the tournament. Rylee Kibbey, Ashley Colaizzi, and Hannin all contributed to the shutout as goal keepers.
On Saturday, the Angels faced the TCSA Wildcats. In the opening minutes of the game, Kibbey, while playing goal keeper, was injured while making a great save. Unfortunately for the Angels, Kibbey was essentially knocked out of the tournament. Luckily though, they did respond when Hannin scored a pair of goals. Several more chances were created, but offside calls negated many of them, leaving the Angels with only a 2-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the Wildcats refused to quit. After having very few chances in the first half, they had four shots in the first 18 minutes of the second half, scoring on 3 of them. For the first time all Spring, the Angels found themselves trailing. They then took it upon themselves to turn up the intensity a notch or two. Cassian grabbed a loose ball on the right side of the field, beat a defender, and then drove a line drive directly into the net to tie the game. Campos then a few minutes later put the Angels ahead when she converted on a great pass from Hannin. With only a few minutes remaining, Hannin added a final goal, giving the Angels a 5-3 win in a sloppy overall performance.
Sunday was a new day, and a chance for the Angels to return to their strong play. They faced South Naperville in the final pool play game of the event. Fifteen seconds into the game Hannin blasted a shot into the net, but was called offside. Still, the Angels fed off of that initial energy, and put on a clinic the rest of the game. Passing was sharp and crisp, moving the ball inside, outside, forward, and backward. They did a great job finding the passing lanes. Mikela Gerdes placed a shot on net that the keeper initially saved, but Campos collected the loose ball, slipping it easily into the net to open the scoring. Near the end of the first half, Campos notched her second goal of the game. From that point forward, the defense really took over the game. Megan Dorsey, Brianna Wunderlich, Glasgow, McCallum, Megan DeMart, and Hannah Gerdes were outstanding in shutting down any opportunities South Naperville had. Colaizzi pitched a shutout, giving the Angels a 2-0 win and a berth into the Championship game.
In the finals, the Angels were matched up against the Bolingbrook Raiders Purple team. The game, being played in the afternoon, was very challenging given the high heat and humidity. Conditioning was certainly going to be a major factor in determining the winner. The Raiders started off the game very strong, controlling the possession for most of the first half. Just a few minutes in, goal keeper, Colaizzi came out of the net to challenge for a loose ball at the top of the penalty area. In eerily similar fashion to the day before, the attacker got the better of the collision, creating a scary injury for the Angels. Colaizzi eventually brushed it off, and remained in the game. The Raiders however kept pushing forward, putting several shots on goal. On a corner kick, they were finally able to find the net when the ball bounced around the penalty area between several players before being kicked into the goal. Only a few minutes later, the Raiders were awarded a penalty kick, almost assuring them a comfortable lead. However, Colaizzi came up huge and stuffed the shot, keeping the Angels in the game. In the second half, the Angels' conditioning started to show. They finally were able to start dictating play, controlling the ball with great passing, up and down the field. The ball control led to a constant attack within the Raiders half of the field, causing them to become very tired. Unfortunately though, shots were just not finding the net. Finally, with just over five minutes remaining, Hannin was on her way to the goal when she was sandwiched hard between to defenders, leading to a much needed penalty kick. Colaizzi came out of the net to calmly place the shot into the right side of the net. The Angels players now sensed that they had a chance to take this game. Their confidence grew and was very visible in their play. With just over a minute to play, Colaizzi made a save and quickly blasted a punt way down the field. With the ball bouncing over the sweeper's head, Hannin collected the punt, and found herself one on one with the charging keeper. They collided in a big way, with the ball squirting out to the right side. Cassian was trailing the play perfectly, raced to the ball, and fired a 20 yard shot into the open net. The Angels players and fans erupted. Thankfully, the Angels kept their composure and easily closed out the final minute of the game to earn a great 2-1 come-from-behind victory to capture their second consective Championship.
