Comets Complete Fall Season
Monday, 23 November 2009 08:00

The Comets completed their fall season with two games on a great weekend for soccer. The first matchup was at home against the Downers Grove Roadrunners.  The Comets came ready to play from the start, putting pressure on the DG defense.  Megan Popple and Mia Lakstigala had early chances but were unable to get it past the DG goalie.  Meanwhile the defense played solid.  Haley Brewer, Nicole Alvarez, Morgan Loncala and Jazmine Newton shut down the DG attack and kept the ball in the DG zone.  The Comets broke through first as Lakstigala used her speed to dribble past the defender and put in a shot from the left side of the goal.  Lakstigala would tally another goal after some fine passing up front by Popple, Hannah Castillo and Aubrey Anderson to make the score 2-0 at the half.

The Comets continued their solid teamwork in the second half.  After several close chances, Kate Duncan made a nice pass to Popple who scored to make it 3-0.  Goalie Audrey Mockenhaupt preserved the shutout with a nice deflection on a shot on goal as the Comets won 3-0.

The second game of the weekend was at the Plainfield Legends Premier.  This would be a physical game and a Comet win would give them a chance at finishing in second place.  The Comets seemed to have trouble with the smaller field and were not able to mount many offensive runs in the first half.  PSA broke through first off a corner kick that was knocked in off of a rebound.  PSA scored a quick second goal to make it 2-0.  Later in the half, PSA would then add to their lead off a direct kick just outside the Comet box.  A nice tackle by Alvaraz on defense prevented any more scoring as the half ended 3-0.

In the second half, the Comets started to resemble the group that played so well the day before.  The Comets were able to keep the ball on the PSA side and had close shots by Castillo and Brewer.  Finally, late in the game, Duncan sent a nice pass to Lakstigala who buried the ball in the back of the net.  Shortly after, Lakstigala sent a high shot from the right side that sailed over the goalie’s head to make it a 3-2 game.  Unfortunately, time ran out on the Comets as PSA won 3-2. This Comets team, playing together for the first time this season, improved throughout the year and finished 4-3-3.
