The Comets played an exciting final game to close their spring season against the Windy City Pride. The Comet’s offense of Mia Lakstigala, Haley Brewer, Jazmine Newton, Audrey Mockenhaupt and Hannah Castillo came out attacking the WindyCity defense. Lakstigala was able to break through the defense to get an early score, putting the Comets ahead 1-0. However, the lead was quickly erased when the Pride answered with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1. The Comet’s offensive pressure continued as Brewer was able to bury one in the net and make the score 2-1 in favor of the Comets. The aggressive defensive play of Nicole Alvarez, Megan Popple, Kate Duncan and goal keeper Morgan Loncala worked together to shut down the Pride offense. Lakstigala was able to score on two additional occasions, one off a nice pass from Castillo, for the hat trick and increase the Comet’s lead to 4-1. Brewer then used her speed to beat the defender and collect her second goal of the day for a 5-1 lead. The Pride were able to regroup and score two late goals to make it a 5-3 Comet lead at halftime.
The second half saw the Comets continuing the offensive pressure. Alvarez had a nice crossing shot that the Comets could not get past the Pride goalkeeper. Shortly after, Lakstigala was able to find the back of the net for her fourth goal of the game and give the Comets a 6-3 lead. However, the Pride continued to fight back, effectively moving the ball down the field and scoring three unanswered goals to make the score 6-6, in spite of several nice saves on goal by Comets goalkeeper Duncan. The Comets continued to play hard but were not able to connect, as the game ended in a 6-6 tie.
