This past Sunday the Comets played their last home game of the season against the Eclipse Select –South. The Eclipse got off to a quick start against the Comets defense of Morgan Loncala, Jazmine Newton, Megan Popple and goal keeper, Kate Duncan, scoring three goals early in the first half to take a 3-0 lead. As play continued, the Comets’ defense settled down and were able to get into an offensive rhythm as Popple was able to answer, scoring the first of her three goals. The first half concluded with the Eclipse leading 3-1. The Comets’ offensive momentum continued in the second half when Popple was able to knock in a goal off a nice crossing pass from Nicole Alvarez to narrow the margin to 3-2. A short time later, the Comets were able to tie the game at 3 when Popple, off of a nice pass by Hannah Castillo, was able to find the back of the net scoring her third goal of the day to give her the hat trick. The offensive pressure continued, as Audrey Mockenhaupt, Haley Brewer, Aubrey Anderson, Alvarez and Duncan worked to move the ball around the field but they were not able to convert any shots on goal. The Comet defense with Loncala in goal and Mia Lakstigala and Brewer in defense continued to play aggressive to erase many scoring opportunities. Eventually, however, the Comets ran out of gas and the Eclipse were able to score two additional goals, making the final score 5-3. Next week, the Comets will complete the spring season when they travel to Lemont to play the Windy City Pride.
