The Comets played their first home game of the spring season on Sunday against the Plainfield Legends Premier. The first half brought steady offensive pressure as the Comets had shots on goal by Haley Brewer, Mia Lakstigala, Hannah Castillo and Jazmine Newton but they were not able to convert against PSA’s defense. The Comets’ defense was solid as Morgan Loncala, Megan Popple, Nicole Alvarez, Aubrey Anderson and Kate Duncan, along with goal keeper Audrey Mockenhaupt, worked hard to limit PSA’s runs at the net. PSA only had a couple shots on goal in the first half, but one did meet the back of the net to account for the only score in the first half.
In the second half, the Comets came out quickly with Brewer knocking in the first of three goals, tying the game 1-1. Within minutes after making her first goal, Brewer dribbled down the field, knocking in her second goal of the game to give the Comets a 2-1 lead. Brewer later buried another shot to give her the hat trick and a 3-1 Comet lead. As the game continued, PSA turned up their offensive intensity allowing them to score and make it a 3-2 Comet advantage. The Comets answered as Castillo scored a goal off a corner kick by Alvarez to put the Comets up 4-2. PSA was able to score a late goal in the last minute, but Mockenhaupt made a couple nice saves as the Comets held on for the 4-3 victory. The Comets are 1-1 on the season and will travel to Oak Brook next week to compete in the Eclipse Select Tournament.
