Match Report: 6/9/08 vs Fire Jrs Print
Sunday, 08 June 2008

Playing in 90 degree temperatures with only 1 sub for most of the game, Ice beat Firs Jrs 2-1 this weekend. Ice started the game with 2 subs, but shortly into the first half Nina Hauser had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital for breathing difficulty, leaving Ice with just 1 sub compared to Fire Jrs 5 subs. Fortunately Hauser made a full recovery and was able to join the team later for the post-game party. Hauser along with with Madison Naro, Chandre Roos, Taylor Robinson and Riley Brown put up a solid defense but shortly after Hauser left Fire Jrs broke through and put one past keeper Emily Maslanka, who made several outstanding saves during the half. Roos was her typical fast, aggresive, hard-working self and seemed to be the only player on either team totally unaffected by the heat or fatigue. Naro did some excellent work controlling the ball for redistribution up front. Brown, playing in her first ever game for Ice showed herselft to be a great asset on the field and in goal when she played keeper in the second half. The midfield rotation of Brittany Straznickas, Taylor Gibson, Holly Schwarz, Victoria Short, and Bridgett Leverich kept control of the ball for most of the game and their work payed off when they got the ball to forward Caeleigh Morton who played it through the defense to the on-rushing feet of her fellow forward Sierra McWilliams who took it to the goal for a powerful finish just before the end of the first half. In the second half, with Brown in goal and Maslanka in defense, the temperature and lack of subs was taking its toll but Ice never gave up and kept pushing the attack. During that time Brown made some very clean, professional saves and after 15 minutes Morton played a through ball to Gibson just outside the penalty box which Gibson finished cooly and clinically. With multiple girls having to be repeatedly subbed out due to fatigue and injury, Ice decided to settle into a more defensive role and backed Morton up to defense and McWilliams to midfield, leaving Leverich up front as the sole forward. Even in this more defensive mode Ice got a few attacking opportunitites but more importantly, easily kept Fire Jrs at bay for the remainder of the half giving Ice the 2-1 win. Ice are now looking forward to their next tournament, the Coerver Cup in 2 weeks, followed by other Summer tournaments. In a season riddled with unbelievable numbers of injuries and other absences, Ice haven't had anything close to a full, uninjured team since they tied B-division leaders Plainfield Legends Premier in a pre-season game. Despite that, Ice have finished in the middle of C division with a 2-2-5 record and won the Oswego Memorial Day tournament, and now with 3 additional very strong players joining the team for next year, Ice are looking forward to the coming year when they expect to move up to B division either in Fall or Spring.
