The Angels played their final league game this past weekend against the Team Chicago Jets, knowing that a victory would finish off an undefeated season and secure the league Championship. Through much of the game, it was obvious that the Angels felt some of the pressure on them, and they played very tight, tentative soccer. Finally, nearly 10 minutes into the game, Macie McCallum collected a rebound and placed a left footed shot over the top of the goal keepers head. Several minutes later, the Jets found themselves on a breakaway, where the Angels defenders thought they had successfully pulled an offside trap. Once the defenders stopped, the Jets attacker screamed down the field and placed a great shot to tie the score.
In the second half, the pressure continued to mount. Defensively, the Angels were very stout. Kasey Campos, McCallum, Abby Glasgow, Brianna Wunderlich, and Rylee Kibbey used a combination of size, speed and skill to continually shut down any of the Jets' attacks. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the score was still knotted at 1 goal apiece. The midfield for the Angels started coming to life. Passes started being connected with regularity, and they started using the entire field to successfully move the ball around. Abby Grzetic grabbed a loose ball at the corner of the penalty area and drilled a shot that the keeper never saw coming to give the Angels the lead. A few short minutes later, Grzetic threaded a beautiful pass through to Taylor Cassian, who fired a rocket into the back of the net. Finally, a few minutes after that, Safia Hannin was fouled hard in the penalty area, allowing Ashley Colaizzi to drill home a well placed penalty kick, bringing the final score to 4-1. Kelli Nielsen and Ashley Binkowski played very strong games, providing the Angels forwards with several opportunities, particularly in the second half. Megan DeMart and Lindsey Graham also played great in the midfield throughout the game.
The Angels finished their magical season with a 7-0-1 record, easily leading the league in scoring. It was a true team effort throughout the entire year, and the girls have a lot for which to be proud. They will try their luck next year as they move up into the B division.
