This past weekend, the Angels returned to league play as they hosted a familiar foe in Darien Dynamo Black. It was clear from the beginning that the windy conditions were going to play a heavy role in the outcome of the game. Fortunately, the Angels had the wind at their back for the first half. Using that to their advantage, they dominated play with a very well controlled passing attack. Playing a relatively new 4-5-1 format, the Angels focused on controlling the middle of the field, with Kasey Campos, Abby Grzetic, Abby Glasgow, and Hannah Schilberg playing the central midfield positions. Great distribution out wide, allowed the outside midfielders, Ashley Colaizzi and Taylor Cassian to work the ball up the wings and feed great crossing balls into the goal mouth. Despite the numerous chances, the Dynamo goal keeper made several outstanding saves, keeping the game scoreless. Finally, just minutes before the half, a ball squirted out of the attacking zone, where Schilberg took a one-time shot that sailed over the keeper's head, putting the Angels in the lead. Rylee Kibbey preserved the shutout in net the remainder of the half.
In the second half, the Dynamo started gaining a little more control of the field. Defensively, the Angels stood strong. Megan Dorsey, Macie McCallum, Megan DeMart, MIkela Gerdes, Sydney Salinas, and Brianna Wunderlich continually thwarted the Dynamo attack. Unfortunately, a slight miscommunication off of a set play paved the way for the Dynamo to find the net midway through the second half. Thankfully, the Angels did not give up. Re-engergized, they started controlling the pace of play and pounding the ball forward into the Dynamo half. Hannah Gerdes won a ball, distributed it to Glasgow, who beat a defender and pushed the ball forward to Cassian down the left side. Cassian fired a great cross that went over the keeper, who came out to keep Safia Hannin from receiving the ball. Once it cleared the keeper, Kibbey was waiting for an easy goal into the back of the net. The Angels continued to fire additonal shots on net, but ended up with a very nice 2-1 victory.
The Angels are now 1-0-1 on the season and face two road contests this coming weekend.
