Angels Lose First Games in AB Division
Monday, 11 October 2010 08:41

The Angels have suddenly found themselves mired in a 3 game losing streak. A week ago, they traveled to both Legacy SC and West Chicago United. The game against Legacy was an extremely windy and cold day. It was clear that the wind would play a big role in the outcome of the game.  The Angels started with the wind in their favor, but unfortunately gave up a goal midway through the half. After working very hard the remainder of the half, Ashley Colaizzi pounded a corner kick toward the front post, where Kasey Campos flicked the ball into the net before the keeper could even see it to tie the game. Safia Hannin and the midfielders created several chances to give the Angels a lead prior to halftime, but Legacy's goal keeper was able to steer them all away. In the second half, the bigger, very physical Legacy team used the wind to their advantage, scoring two goals, giving them a 3-1 victory.

The next day against WC United was a much different story. The Angels came out playing a great possession style game. Midfielders Abby Grzetic, Taylor Cassian, Hannah Schilberg, Colaizzi, Mikela Gerdes, and Hannah Gerdes were outstanding. They consistently won control of 50/50 balls and took control of the middle of the field.  Their play also produced several shots on goal, in both working up the sides of the field and occasionally up the middle. Defensively, Megan Dorsey, Macie McCallum, Megan DeMart, Brianna Wunderlich, Sydney Salinas, and goal keeper, Rylee Kibbey did a great job thwarting the swift attack of WC United. WC United possessed a lot of speed and some very good foot skills, but the Angels defense matched their effort quite well.  However, midway through the second half, WC United took advantage of a mis-cleared ball and drove it into the net for what proved to be the winning goal in a 1-0 final.

This past weekend, the Angels hosted an old foe, Moxie United. Moxie jumped out to an early lead, but the Angels fought back, with McCallum blasting a long range shot into the upper corner to notch the score. Moxie was then able to find the net before the half ended, regaining the lead. In the second half, Moxie consistently played long balls up the field, and used their speed to find the net two more times, giving them a 4-1 victory. Despite the score, special commendation goes out to Abby Glasgow, who played a fantastic, passionate and physical game defensively for the Angels.

The Angels hope to rebound this coming weekend, as they play a double-header this coming Sunday.  They will look to avenge their loss to WC United and then travel to Kaneland.
