Stars Finish Season in Peoria
Monday, 29 June 2009 02:34

The U9 Stars played in the River City Soccer Classic in Peoria the weekend of June 20 - 21.

The Stars played the first game of the tournament against JGSA. The Stars came out aggressive and Brittni Ice scored the first two goals of the game, off of assists by Megan Popple and Kaylee Zimbelmann. Zimbelmann scored her own goal to give the Stars a 3-0 halftime advantage. The formidable defense by Maya Bonie, Holly Gotchie, Maddie Woolf and Lauren Gotchie kept JGSA scoreless. The second half saw the Stars pour it on. Ice would tally two more goals as Loncala assisted on both.  Ice would later score another goal, her 5th of the game. Popple would add two of her own as the Stars started the tournament strong with an 8-0 win.

The Stars had their work cut out for them in the second game against the Cary Defenders. Goalie Kate Duncan played great as both teams were up and down the field. Popple had two nice attempts at goals but was denied. Zimbelmann was able to secure the Stars first goal on a nice shot from the side of the field to open the scoring. The Stars offense, Audrey Mockenhaupt, Ice, Popple and Zimbelmann tried hard to add to the lead but could not break through. The second half saw Lauren Gotchie in goal and she, along with the solid defense, kept the Defenders scoreless to preserve the 1-0 victory.

On Sunday, EMSSC was the Stars' first opponent. Loncala started in goal but did not see much action as the defense, once again, pitched a shutout. The offense was equally impressive, staking the Stars to a 3-0 halftime lead on goals by Zimblemann, Popple, and Bonie. The floodgates opened in the second half as the Stars scored 6 goals, including tallies by Duncan, Loncala, and Lauren Gotchie as the Stars cruised to a 9-0 win.

In the final game of the tourney, the Stars would be matched against the Cary Defenders. This game saw a lot of physical, tough play as both teams were aggressive and evenly matched. The Stars would be able to score first as Popple passed the ball to Ice who kicked the ball past the goalie. The Defenders answered back to tie the score at 1, the first goal allowed by the defense in 4 games! Zimbelmann then capitalized on a penalty shot off a hand ball in the box to give the Stars a 2-1 halftime lead. The Defenders were able to slip in another goal after half to once again tie the score. Neither team was able to relax as the game was intense. It looked like the game would end in a tie, giving the Stars the overall win with the most tournament points. However, in the last 15 seconds of the game, two Cary players broke free and scored the winning goal. The Stars lost 3-2 but had a great tournament to finish their season!
