On Saturday, the Stars hosted the then first place Downers Grove Roadrunners. On a gloomy, cold and windy Halloween morning, the Stars were immediately given a fright when the Roadrunners scored a very early goal. The scares kept coming when the Roadrunners scored again for an early 2-0 lead. The Stars managed to get their minds off of trick or treating and stepped up the defense to keep the deficit 2-0 at the half. In the second half, the sun came out and the Stars really warmed up. The Stars fought for every ball and pressured the Roadrunners consistently. Maddie Woolf, Angeline Lewis, and Holly Gotchie played great defense, allowing only a few shots on goal. Brittni Ice really played solid keeper and controlled the few shots with ease. Ice's punting really helped keep pressure on the Roadrunner's defense. The Stars offense kept the ball mostly in their end of the field, with Riley Cassian, Kaylee Zimbelmann, Holly Sutkay and Lauren Gotchie supplying great offensive pressure. Shot after shot just missed. Finally, Kaylee Zimbelmann nailed one past the keeper to cut the deficit to 1-2. The goal put the Stars into a frenzy, attacking the ball at every position. Kaylee soon tied the score with another great shot. With only moments remaining, Riley Cassian, playing left forward, lofted a ball over the defenders to right forward Rachel Savaglio. Savaglio beat the defender who tried to knock her off the ball and deposited her shot into the left side of the net for the 3-2 victory. The Stars really showed some heart by coming back against the then first place team. With the victory, the Stars put themselves into contention for a first place finish in league play.
On Sunday, the Stars hosted the Barrington Hawks. The two teams battled for most of the first half without a score. Maya Bonie, barely recovered from being ill, played very well at goalkeeper. Finally, the Stars broke through when Lauren Gotchie scored on a great shot from a seemingly impossible angle for the 1-0 lead. Defensively, Maddie Woolf, Angeline Lewis, and Holly Gotchie crushed any offense the Hawks attempted. Brittni Ice made the score 2-0 when she nailed a shot from the right side past the keeper. In the second half, offensive pressure was consistent with Kaylee Zimbelmann, Holly Sutkay, Riley Cassian, and Rachel Savaglio playing very well. Holly Sutkay had a breakout game, beating multiple defenders and powering the ball past the Hawks' keeper for the 3-0 lead. A short time later, the Hawks managed a goal to cut the lead to 3-1. Holly Sutkay continued with her best game of the year, earning an assist by crossing the ball from right to left where Riley Cassian one-touched the ball into the net for the final goal and the 4-1 victory. With one game remaining, the Stars' gritty play has vaulted them into first place in league play with complete control over whether they capture the championship.
