St. Patrick's Day Tournament

On Saturday, the Stars traveled to Lake Barrington for the St. Patrick’s Day Tournament. In the first game, they took on the Cary Defenders. The game was pretty tight, with neither team able to put the ball in the net for the first 20 minutes. Finally, with 6 minutes left, Kaylee Zimbelmann took a throw from Angeline Lewis and found the net for the 1-0 lead. A short time later, Rachel Saavaglio blasted a shot off a defender who screened her own goalkeeper in a hockey style goal for the final score of 3-0.

In game two, the Stars played Zen United. The scoring started fast and kept up throughout the game. Holly Sutkay made a nice pass to Rachel Savaglio who then passed the ball to Brittni Ice. Ice rocketed a shot literally through the keeper for the 1-0 lead. The Defenders tied the score almost immediately. Kaylee Zimbelmann then intercepted a throw from the Cary keeper, and sailed a 30 yard shot over the keeper and under the crossbar in what everyone thought would be the shot of the day. However, Rachel Savaglio’s next goal was clearly the shot of the day. The keeper nailed a line drive on a goal kick to Savaglio who was at the top of the box. Rachel intentionally struck the ball with her forehead, causing it to fly about 20 yards on a line into the back of the net. Ice collected 2 more goals, giving her 3 in the game. All of her shots were hard and well placed. Rachel Savaglio added a 2nd goal and the game ended with a 6-2 Stars victory.

The final game of the day found the Stars playing a very skilled Kickers United FC team. The Kickers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Lauren Gotchi sent a beautiful pass to Kaylee Zimbelmann, who crossed it to Holly Sutkay who one-timed it into the net. The Kickers scored a third time for the 3-1 win. Overall, the Stars played very well with the defense of Angeline Lewis, Maya Bonie, Maddie Woolf, and Holly Gotchie doing a fine job of stopping some very good offenses.
