On Saturday, the Stars took on Team Evanston Orange. The Stars exhibited some stellar defense, with Maddie Woolf, Angeline Lewis, Holly Gotchie and Lauren Gotchie all contributing to stop a big and fast Evanston offense. Maya Bonie played very well in goal, diving on the ball and taking on defenders with no fear. Offensively, the Stars jumped out to an early lead when Kaylee Zimbelmann gathered the ball and nailed it past the keeper. Later, Kaylee sent a beautiful pass to Brittni Ice streaking down the right side. Brittni placed the ball into the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead. Brittni added the third and final goal on a shot from the right that deflected off the keeper and into the net. Riley Cassian, Rachel Savaglio and Holly Sutkay had solid games and contributed to the victory.
On Sunday, the Stars traveled to Lemont to play the Lemont Raiders. Early on, the Raiders were playing very aggressively and had the Stars on their heels. The Raiders' attack was helped by a stiff breeze at their backs and a field which sloped towards the Stars' goal. Despite the first half field advantage, the Raiders were unable to score. Instead, the Stars scored when Brittni Ice's well struck corner kick bounced around in front of the Raiders' net before somehow finding the net. Riley Cassian denied touching the ball to the chagrin of the Stars' statistician. In any event, the first half ended with a 1-0 Stars lead. In the second half, Holly Sutkay handled the ball nicely on the left side and centered the ball to Kaylee Zimbelmann who one-touched it past the keeper. The Stars relentlessy pressured the Raiders defense throughout the second half, with multiple shots just missing. Riley Cassian had a goal erased after being called offside. The final score came when Holly Gotchie booted the ball from midfield to Rachel Savaglio who, instead of rocketing the ball, nicely touched it past the keeper for the 3-0 win.
It should be recognized that the Stars recorded two shutout victories against AB division teams over the weekend. Brittni Ice dominated in goal against Lemont in the second half, making several great saves and punting the ball downfield to begin scoring opportunities. Maya Bonie played well in goal in the first half and followed that with solid play on the field. The Gotchie twins, Holly and Lauren, continue to play well. The speed and recovery ability of Angeline Lewis and Maddie Woolf really stopped many breakaways by the Raiders' offense.
