Stars Take on Comets
Sunday, 07 March 2010 21:03

On Sunday, the Panther SC Stars played the Panther SC Comets in a tough game that featured club rivals.  The Comets came out firing, with Mia Lakstigala playing very aggressively.  She took several shots on goal in the first half and her speed created a problem for the Stars defense.  Maya Bonie in goal and the defensive line of Angeline Lewis, Holly Gotchie and Maddie Woolf combined for the first half shut-out.  For the first five minutes, neither team could score.  Riley Cassian then controlled a loose ball in the box and took a tough shot which rebounded to Kaylee Zimbelmann who was waiting at the left corner of the box.  Kaylee's shot found the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.  A few minutes later, Riley passed to Lauren Gotchie who scored on a shot past Kate Duncan, who played very well in goal for the Comets.  With only 2 minutes left in the first half, Kaylee Zimbelmann's shot rebounded to Rachel Savaglio who rocketed a shot over Duncan's outstretched arms for the 3-0 halftime lead.

The first 5 minutes of the second half exhibited good defense by both teams.  Five minutes in, Rachel Savaglio took a nice pass from Riley Cassian and buried the ball in the net for a 4-0 lead.  The Comets played very aggressively throughout the game and it began to pay off in the second half.  They scored twice to cut the lead to 4-2.  Brittni Ice played well on offense in the first half and played well in goal in the second.  The Comet's second goal came after a quick inbounds shot that Ice just did not have enough time to defend.  Holly Sutkay played solidly on offense throughout the game.  Overall, the Stars did just enough to manage a tough win against their club rivals.  The Stars improved to 8-0-1 to remain undefeated and in first place in winter league play with only two regular season games left.
