On Friday, the Stars traveled to Schaumburg to take on the Schaumburg Cosmos. After a long and rainy drive, the Stars allowed 2 quick goals. They played on a wet artificial turf field that was smaller than what they are used to and the Stars had a tough time judging the speed and slickness of the field. Midway through the first half, Holly Sutkay scored to cut the deficit to one goal. Kaylee Zimbelmann than shot from the right corner and the ball ricocheted off of a defender into the goal to tie the game before halftime. In the second half, the Cosmos scored 3 relatively quick goals to take a 5-2 lead. With 15 minutes left, the Stars seemed to have little hope for a victory. But then things changed. After a penalty, Kaylee nailed a perfect shot over a defender wall and under the crossbar to cut the deficit to 2. After a handball by the Cosmos, the Stars were awarded an indirect kick. Holly Sutkay touched the ball back to Kaylee, who neatly placed it in the left side of the goal to make the score 5-4. Rachel Savaglio than passed to Holly Sutkay who beat a defender, faked out the keeper and shot a soft but accurate shot into the net to tie the game. With just minutes remaining, the Cosmos were called for a handball in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Stars. Kaylee Zimbelmann calmly knocked it in for the game winner. The game was sloppy and crazy, but it really showed the teamwork and never quit attitude that makes the Stars so good.
On Saturday evening, the Stars suffered a crushing loss to Team Elhurst Select. The Stars came out very flat and just never seemed to get things going. Lets just say that the score was a lot to a little and leave it at that.
On a scorching Sunday afternoon, the Stars played the second place CL Force Elite. The Stars came out playing much better as a team than they had the previous two days. Brittni Ice and Maya Bonie combined in goal to allow just one score. The defense finally showed their normal speed, skill and toughness. Kaylee Zimbelmann scored both goals. Their opponent scored on a penalty kick and the final score was Stars 2 and CL Force Elite 1. Next weekend, the Stars participate in the Oswego Soccer Classic. Good luck Stars!
